how much does it cost to produce biodiesel

how much does it cost to produce biodiesel is a question more people are asking by the day. As with everything in this life though, there is not one, difinitive answer. It depends on things like what you base your biodiesel on soybean oil, vegetable oil, new or 'yellow grease' etc. Factors such as the chemicals and additives you use also have a bearing. You could water wash your biodiesel in the traditional way, which would be a cheaper option, or you could use a modern product such as Magnesol which will give you better quality biodiesel in a fraction of the time. So how much does it cost to produce biodiesl also becomes a question of where you choose to draw the line of balance between quality, convenience and cost.

That said, we're not going to totally cop out on an answer. When someone asks 'How much does it cost to produce biodiesel' they're noramlly referring to variable costs, ie the cost-per-gallon side of things. Helpfully, there are rules of thumb and ballparks we can refer to. These vary as new techniques and products are brought to market but, at the time of writing, how much does it cost to produce biodiesel could be answered with the range from 30p to 50p a gallon. That said, some equipment manufacturers claim costs as low as 20p a gallon using their equipment.

Of course, here in the UK, answering the question how much does it cost to produce biodiesel extends beyond the mere production costs. After you've produced it, you've then got to be a good citizen and tell the Chancellor of the Exchequer about it, in order that you can cough up the appropriate amount of fuel duty. Before September 1st 2006, this was sitting at 27.1p a litre, but never one to be happy with taking an inch when he can creep in a mile, Mr Brown will be raising that to 28.35 after September 1st 2006. While spin doctors would argue 27p's a lot cheaper than the 48p a litre which conventional, fossil-fuel diesel attracts, a cynical person might question whether doubling the cost of a viable, renewable fuel is the action of someone who is genuinely interested in saving the environment.
